Maryland Senate Mourns Congressman Elijah Cummings

Marylanders woke up this morning to news of the passing of longtime Congressman and House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings. A member of the House of Representatives since 1996, Cummings political career began in the Maryland General Assembly in 1983 upon his election to the Maryland House of Delegates. He would serve in the General Assembly from 1983 until his election to Congress in 1996. Known for his intellect and passion, Cummings would rise through the ranks of Congress and become a true leader both revered and admired by many. Reactions to Cummings passing came from across the state and from many current and members of the Maryland Senate Democratic Caucus. Many of these reactions are included below.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr.

“Congressman Elijah Cummings was a role model, friend, icon, and one of the people I most admired in Maryland politics. I cherished every conversation we had, joke we shared, and insight he could provide. He was a giant of a man with a gentle soul, and every Marylander benefited from his years of public service. Elijah was fond of the quote “Public Service is the rent we pay for our space on this earth”, and he lived the spirit of those words every day. My thoughts are with Elijah’s three children, his wife Dr. Maya Rockeymoore-Cummings, and his entire family and extended Maryland family during this time of mourning. He will truly be missed, may he Rest In Peace. ”

Maryland Attorney General and Former Maryland State Senator Brian Frosh

“The passing of Representative Elijah E. Cummings is a blow to Maryland and to the US. He was a warrior for fairness, justice and democracy. He was a peerless orator, champion of the downtrodden and a wonderful friend. We are all poorer for his passing.”

United States Senator and Former Maryland State Senator Chris Van Hollen

“At a time of chaos and division, our friend Elijah Cummings stood strong as a man of principle, unity, dignity, and compassion. His insatiable thirst for justice was rooted in his core. Maryland has lost a beloved son and our nation a hero of our times.”

We knew he was ill, but I believed he was getting better. I am deeply saddened by the fact of his untimely death. May he Rest In Peace, Paradise, Power.”

Senator Sarah Elfreth

“Baltimore, Maryland, and our nation have lost a giant. Congressman Cummings was a champion for us all and his impact will be felt for generations to come. For anyone who had the opportunity to hear him speak – the kind of speech where the whole room goes quiet and, every time, you walked away inspired – you know he was the best of us. I’m thinking of his wife, children, and staff at this difficult time. Thank you for sharing him with us.”

Senator Arthur Ellis

“Today, a paladin of our community and state has passed. Chairman Cummings, we will miss you. Thank you for your leadership, strength and inspiration. We will continue your good work with you in our hearts.”

“There are no words to sufficiently convey the depth of our sorrow when we learned of the passing of this great man. We in the 43rd District, Baltimore City, Maryland and Worldwide have been blessed to count on him as a friend and mentor. He has been with us in every fight. A strong and steady light in what was too frequently a dull and dismal political landscape. A champion who gave a full throated voice to our hopes and our outrage. Our hearts go out to Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings , her family and indeed the world. We will miss him! Good night and rest in peace, our Honorable Elijah Cummings, your spirit will live on as we continue this fight.”

Senator Craig Zucker
